Here are a few tips from Mac Plumbing that you can do to keep your septic tank running smoothly
More than one in five households have septic tanks. Most of these households are in rural areas but some older homes in bigger neighborhoods were not put on city water and sewage so they still maintain a septic tank system.
What is a septic tank system?
A septic system has a large container located underground which holds solids and scum from your wastewater. There is normally live bacteria within the tank that breaks down the solid waste and then goes through a pipe system that drains into what’s called a leach field or drain field in your back yard.
What can you do to help?
Do’s:
- Perform regular maintenance. Mac Plumbing suggests having your septic tank pumped every 3 to 5 years.
- Maintain your drain field. Avoid planting gardens or trees where roots can invade your tank. Also, avoid parking vehicles over the drain field.
- Limit the stuff you put in your garbage disposal. I.e. cooking grease, coffee grounds, fats, etc.
Don’ts:
- Don’t flush anything down your toilet that isn’t toilet paper. No diapers, cigarette butts, cat litter, etc.
- Don’t pour chemicals down the drain. Some chemicals can damage your septic tank system.
- Don’t waste water. Too much water can overflow the septic tank system. If you have a leaky faucet… Call Mac Plumbing!
Remember that everything that has water that drains will go through your septic tank. That includes your hot tub, washing machine, toilets, garbage disposal, etc. So be careful with what goes down those drains.
But the most important tip is to get your plumbing checked regularly. Regular inspections can catch small problems before they become big disasters.
