Your air conditioner is humming, air is coming from the vents, and the thermostat says the system is running—yet the house keeps getting warmer. An AC that runs without cooling may have a simple airflow problem, but it can also point to a frozen coil, refrigerant issue, failed component, or duct problem.
During a hot, humid Clarksville summer, an air conditioner may run for long stretches. Long runtime alone does not prove that something is broken. The stronger warning signs are air that is not cool, indoor temperatures that continue to rise, weak airflow, ice on the refrigerant line, water near the indoor unit, or an outdoor unit that is not operating.
Start With a Few Safe Checks
Before scheduling service, check the settings and airflow conditions you can see without opening the equipment. These steps will not solve every cooling failure, but they can rule out several common problems.
- Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool and the target temperature is below the current room temperature.
- Set the fan to Auto unless your system manufacturer or technician has recommended another setting.
- Check the air filter and replace it if it is dirty, using the correct size and type for the system.

- Check whether a breaker has tripped. Reset it no more than once; if it trips again, leave the system off and call for service.
Give the system a reasonable amount of time after correcting a thermostat or filter issue. If the temperature continues to climb or the air from the vents remains warm, the equipment needs a closer look.
Common Reasons an AC Runs Without Cooling
Restricted airflow
A clogged filter, blocked return, closed registers, dirty evaporator coil, damaged duct, or blower problem can reduce the amount of warm indoor air moving across the cold coil. That limits cooling capacity and may cause the evaporator coil to freeze. A filter change can help when the filter is the only restriction, but recurring ice or weak airflow requires diagnosis.
A dirty or obstructed outdoor unit
The outdoor condenser must release heat removed from the home. Grass clippings, leaves, lint, dense vegetation, or a dirty coil can interfere with that process. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping debris away from the outdoor unit. Coil cleaning should be performed with methods that will not bend the fins or damage electrical components.
A frozen evaporator coil
Ice may form when airflow is too low or refrigerant conditions are abnormal. If you see ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil area, turn cooling off. Continuing to run the system can build more ice and strain the compressor. Do not chip at the ice or pour hot water on the equipment; let it thaw and have the cause evaluated.
A refrigerant leak or incorrect charge
Refrigerant carries heat through the cooling system. It is not a fuel that should routinely run out. If the charge is low, the system may have a leak or another service issue. A technician should locate the problem, explain the repair options, and verify the correct charge instead of repeatedly adding refrigerant without addressing the cause.
A fan, capacitor, compressor, or electrical failure
The thermostat can call for cooling even when a critical component does not start. A failed capacitor, contactor, fan motor, control, or compressor can leave part of the system running while the home receives little or no cooling. These components involve hazardous voltage and should be tested by a qualified HVAC technician.
Leaky or damaged ductwork
The equipment may be producing cold air that never reaches the rooms. Disconnected, crushed, poorly sealed, or poorly insulated ducts can lose conditioned air into an attic, crawlspace, or other unconditioned area. Duct problems often show up as weak airflow, unusually hot rooms, excessive dust, or a system that runs much longer than expected.
The system cannot keep up with the home’s cooling load
Extreme outdoor heat, direct sun, air leakage, inadequate insulation, large indoor heat gains, or equipment sizing can affect how quickly a home cools. If the AC maintains a stable indoor temperature on the hottest afternoon but runs continuously, it may be working as designed. If indoor temperature keeps rising or the system has never cooled the home evenly, the contractor should evaluate both the equipment and the home—not simply recommend a larger unit.
When Should You Turn the AC Off?
Turn the system off and schedule service if you see ice, smell burning, hear harsh electrical buzzing or grinding, find water near electrical components, or experience a breaker that trips more than once. If there is smoke or fire, leave the home and call 911 from a safe location.
You should also call when the outdoor unit is silent while the indoor fan runs, when airflow is extremely weak, or when the thermostat temperature continues to rise after the basic checks above. Running a malfunctioning system for hours rarely makes the repair smaller.

A professional diagnosis may include thermostat operation, filter condition, airflow, temperature difference, blower performance, indoor and outdoor coils, condensate drainage, electrical components, refrigerant pressures and temperatures, duct condition, and equipment sizing. The goal is to identify why the home is not cooling—not merely replace the first part that looks suspicious.
