Did you know, the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day for plumbers? Mac Plumbing has some tips to help keep you free from any plumbing problems this holiday season
Hosting a holiday means more people in your home than normal, leading to extra water usage and of course, lots of food consumed which can all lead to strain on your plumbing system.
In the Kitchen
- Watch what you put down your drain.
- Avoid putting fats or cooking oil down the drain as they solidify in pipes and cause clogs.
- Wipe off greasy pans before washing them.
- Garbage disposal
- Don’t put stringy, fibrous waste down the disposal.
- This includes poultry skins, celery, pumpkin pulp, fruit, and potato peels.
- Run cold water for 15 seconds before and after using the disposal to flush waste down the drain.
- Make sure the disposal is running when you put food debris in. Don’t wait until it’s full before turning it on.
- If there is an issue with the disposal, do not operate the dishwasher.
- Don’t put stringy, fibrous waste down the disposal.
- Run the dishwasher at night or at off times during the day to conserve water temperature and pressure for your guests.
In the Bathroom
- Plan ahead and spread out showers throughout the day.
- If possible, wait at least 10 minutes between showers.
- Turn up the water heater to increase its capacity to meet houseguests demands.
- Make sure there’s a trash bin in your bathroom so the toilet isn’t being used as a garbage can.
- If you have multiple people showering, make sure to use a mesh strainer over the drain to catch hair.
- Never flush these items
- Cotton balls
- Swabs
- Hair
- Scrub pads or similar items.
